A subscription people are glad to renew

A subscription is a decision your audience makes about you every month. We help you design one they're happy to keep making, and we run it with you.

Subscription revenue works best when it's good for the subscriber and the publisher at the same time: a clear promise, plain pricing, and an experience that makes renewing feel obvious. We help independent media brands design that subscription, build the systems underneath it and run it month to month.

How we think about subscriptions

Price for the people who value you most. A committed group of subscribers who renew year after year is the strongest foundation a media business can have, and it's built one cohort at a time.

We measure everything, so decisions about pricing, packaging and content come from who joins, who stays and why. Our guide to pricing a paid newsletter or membership sets out the approach.

What we do

Stephen Han, who founded the studio, previously led subscription infrastructure at Vox Media for The Verge and New York Magazine: a platform serving 15 brands and $50M in subscription revenue.

How you'll know it's working

Common questions

How do media brands build subscription revenue?

By offering something specific that their most committed readers will pay for every month, pricing it for those readers, launching to them first, and then improving retention cohort by cohort. Recurring revenue builds on each month that subscribers stay.

Should I charge monthly or annually?

Offer both. Monthly lowers the barrier to joining, annual improves retention and cash flow, and a modest annual discount usually moves a meaningful share of committed subscribers onto it.

What do I need to run a subscription business?

A clear offer and price, billing that recovers failed payments, sign-in that connects payment to access, and analytics that show who joined, who stayed and who left. We build and run all four.

Who we work with

We work with a few independent media brands at a time: brands with an opinion, a narrow focus and a hopeful view of the world. If that sounds like you, tell us what your audience keeps asking for.
